BACTERIAL IDENTIFICATION SERVICE

Bacterial identification based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing has become the universally accepted gold standard for bacterial systematics. The advantages of bacterial identification by 16S rDNA sequencing are fast turnaround time and accurate results even for problematic bacteria.

 

Description of the service

You provide us your bacterial pure culture grown on solid agar plate or agar slant, we will perform the following procedure for the identification:

The following two types of the identification services are available:

  1. Quick identification service

The first 500 bp of 16S rDNA will be sequenced in a double stranded manner. The sequence obtained will be used for sequence identity search by BLAST in Genbank. Top 5 matches will be listed in the report.

  1. Full length identification service

The full length of 16S rDNA will be sequenced in a double stranded manner. The sequence obtained will be used for sequence identity search by BLAST in Genbank. Top 5 matches will be listed in the report.

 

At the end of service, you will receive a comprehensive report which contains:

  • The assembled 16S rDNA sequence of bacterial strain
  • List of the top 5 matches resulting from sequence identity search on Genbank
  • Raw sequencing data with electrophoregram
  • Author citation and literature references

 

Sample submission

We accept fresh bacterial pure culture grown on solid agar plate or agar slant. If the bacterial culture is submitted on agar plate, please ensure the agar plate is sealed. Please send fresh cultures that are no more than 1-2 weeks old on arrival. Make sure that each culture has a reference number or name that is clearly marked on the Petri dish or slant bottle using an adhesive label or indelible marker pen. Please note that we do not accept pathogenic organisms.

Turnaround time

4-5 days for Quick Identification Service.
5-6 days for Full Length Identification Service.

PHYLOGENETIC STUDY

We provide phylogenetic analysis service for the study of the phylogeny of bacterial strains based on 16S rRNA gene sequence. As a result of phylogenetic analysis, a phylogenetic tree is constructed by comparing the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the strain of interest with those of related organisms. The differences in the sequences are expressed as evolutionary distance and the organisms are clustered to determine relatedness. A bootstrapping analysis is also performed to evaluate the reliability of tree topology.

To use this service, please provide us with the full 16S rRNA gene sequence of the strain of interest and we will perform the analysis. At the end of the service, you will receive a comprehensive report which contains (1) phylogenetic tree with bootstrap support; (2) sequence identity matrix indicating the sequence identity between the interested organism and related organisms; and (3) phylogenetic identity of the interested strain inferred by the phylogenetic tree.
